Weathering the Weather

Rebecca Bennington Blog Picture

I live in Ohio where the weather is very unpredictable, and the forecasts are grossly inaccurate.   The problem with that for me is that I like to go outdoors, but not when it is raining, not when it is too cold, not to ride my bike if it is too windy, along with several other disqualifiers.  I love to plan a good rainy day indoors, but if I do, sure enough the sun comes out!  And then I have wasted one of the few good weather days and there just aren’t enough of those to let even one pass you by.

So, I have decided to learn to enjoy the rain.  It’s going to be a difficult task for me.  I am a person who gets the blues when the skies are cloudy for too long, and I have spent time in a red-light therapy booth to battle this.  I take extra Vitamin D to compensate for the lack of sunshine in Ohio.  But I have wasted too many days staying indoors, waiting for the clouds to clear.  It’s time for me to get in the rain.

I think of this as an analogy for life. There is a saying that “life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass.  It’s about learning to dance in the rain”.  And of course, we know that life can be stormy, and problems and situations come up that are frightening, and violent, and it feels like they may never end.  But this saying means that we must learn to dance, or be happy, even during the rain.  That is my current task.

First, I need the right attire.  If I am going to take my chances on getting caught in the rain, or even to venture out during the rain, I need gear.  I need something lightweight and easy to carry, that will keep me dry.  After reading the reviews I decided to get Frog Togs.  These are lightweight, roll up in an easy to carry bag (that fits in the bottle rack of my bicycle), and they keep me dry.  They also have pockets so I can keep cash or snack bars dry.  You can find them here on Amazon –  https://amzn.to/3UvHBfL.

If I am going to go for a walk, I need a lightweight, easy to carry umbrella.  Here’s a link to the one I found:  ht. ://amzn.to/3WrckNx.  I do not know how long it will last, but it comes in nice colors and there are hundreds of others on Amazon if you do not like this one.  This one is okay, as far as umbrellas go and my purpose is needing one.

Now I am ready to endure, and maybe even enjoy, the rain.

If I were to prepare myself with ‘gear’ for the storms that life throws at us, my list would be supportive people, stress management tools (such as hobbies or other diversions), healthy habits, and a place to scream.  (Or if screaming is not appropriate in your building or HOA, a good journal can suffice).  Again, Amazon has thousands to choose from here-   https://amzn.to/4btf7tN

Maybe with these tools I could learn to dance when life rains on me!  There is no forecast that can predict when that might happen.

As always, if you would like to talk with someone to help you navigate the rains, please contact us.  We are always happy to help you along your Path to Happy.  Until then, try to stay dry!
