Spirituality Introduction

Spirituality Introduction

This is a difficult subject to approach because it is interpreted in so many different ways.  For some, spirituality is equated with religion.  For others, it speaks to eternal life and morality with or without religion.  For still others, it is about meditation and personal reflection and self-discovery.  Depending on your background and your frame of reference, spirituality can mean a lot of different things.  There are so many definitions with so many variants, it is easier to try to determine what it is NOT, rather than what it IS.

For the purpose of this article, spirituality refers to that part of you that is not physical but exists outside of your physical realm as part of you.  It is not biological.  It is not visible.  It is not measurable.  It is not the same for everyone.  It cannot be captured or controlled.  It’s complicated.  It can also be referred to as one’s soul.

Not everyone believes they have a soul.

There is exhaustive research into whether or not people have souls, and also whether or not other animals have souls.  There is no conclusive proof either way.

Whether or not you believe you are a spiritual being is influenced by many factors.  Your family, culture, geography, life experiences – all have a part to play in your worldview.

Do you need a spirit?  What is it good for?

Spirituality has a purpose.  Many people rely on their spiritual existence to cope with difficulties in life.  The belief that there is more to our existence than our physical bodies allows us to believe in life after death.  If this is our belief, then we can expect reunification with loved ones in an after life and accept the difficulties of a physical world easier by knowing that a metaphysical world will not present the same woes.  Spirituality can allow us to be accepted in a metaphysical way when we are not accepted in this physical world.  It can provide us with faith and can prevent us from loneliness by believing that our higher power is with us for guidance and comfort.

The difficult question then is, how do you connect with your spiritual self?  How do you decide for yourself whether or not you have a soul?  And do you need to have a spiritual presence to be happy?

The following articles will provide information on both sides of this subject.  Ultimately, it is up to you to decide if YOUR path to happy requires you to engage in a spiritual presence.  As always, if you would like to talk more about this please schedule some time with one of our coaches to do that.
